For freezing x-screens:

change /etc/X11/xorg.conf, add the 2 lines to the device section: 

       Option "AccelMethod" "EXA"
       Option "MigrationHeuristic" "greedy"

download this script, it is a absolutly-must-have for Compiz users, and run it 

wget http://blogage.de/files/9124/download -O compiz-check

at the Blacklist section say yes to ignore.
